Aerial attacks across Sudan have caused a worrying increase in civilian harm in recent weeks, and most of them were likely carried out by armed drones, the International Committee of the Red Cross said Oct. 22, 2026.

Residential areas, markets and areas sheltering displaced people have been particularly affected, with hundreds of people reportedly killed, according to the ICRC. It said this raises grave concerns about the protection of civilians and risks aggravating “the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.”

“The use of drones does not change the rules of war. Technology does not absolve those who use it of their obligations under international humanitarian law,” said Lorenzo Caraffi, head of the ICRC’s delegation in Sudan.

The ICRC said it is supporting hospitals across Sudan with essential medical supplies and specialist surgical teams, and that hospitals it supports recorded more than 2,700 weapon-wounded patients in the first half of 2026. It urged all sides to take into account the foreseeable humanitarian consequences of using armed drones, particularly in populated areas.
